ODIME’s New Gompei Closet Now Accepting Clothing Requests and Donations | Announcements | New

Gompei’s Closet

The Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Multicultural Education (ODIME) is proud to launch a new clothing pantry Gompei’s Closet for the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) community.

Gompei’s Closet will be housed on the second floor of the Collegiate Religious Center (CRC) at 19 Schussler Road and will serve as an on-campus resource for students to request and receive clothing products, ties, dress shirts, blouses, shirts, underwear, socks, and other clothing. The initial donations were made possible by Hillel, Green Team and Mackenzie Lipman.

The ODIME team is grateful to all of our campus partners, faculty, staff, community partners and close collaborators who have made this student need visible and possible. ODIME will partner with the free Green Team thrift store each quarter to accept and clean up donations provided by the WPI community, and inclusively sort clothing so students have access to what they might need. ODIME will also fill the void of the donations received by purchasing clothing material worn under the outer clothing as part of a sanitary practice.

“Clothing is a bone of contention for people with social places where multiple marginal identities meet. Gompei’s Closet exists to alleviate the stressors of how one presents oneself to the world. I imagine that students request any type of material from our office to support and encourage students who choose to present themselves in all spheres, public and private. Access to clothing is a basic human right, and Gompei’s Closet serves as a resource for students to exercise this right. –Kalvin Cummings, Associate Director for Religion and Spiritual Life
