Norma Jean (Kuhn) Berens


Norma Jean (Kuhn) Berens, 85, of Victoria, Kansas, died Thursday, April 14, 2022 at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays.

She was born on September 12, 1936 in Emmeram, Kansas, to Leo J. and Catherine (Billinger) Kuhn. She married Vernon L. Berens on December 27, 1961 in Victoria. He preceded her in death on July 21, 2010.

She was a primary school teacher for 36 years and taught at Victoria Grade School for 34 years. She was also a religious education teacher for Victoria Parish Primary School and Norma Jean retired in 1997.

She grew up on the Emmeram family farm, attended Emmeram Elementary School, graduated from Victoria High School in 1953, and earned her master’s degree in elementary education from Fort Hays State University.

Norma was a cast member of the show “Sweet and Sour Kraut”, a member of the Basilica of St. Fidelis, St. Fidelis Christian Mothers, St. Fidelis Daughters of Isabella, VFW Auxiliary all of Victoria. She loved to embroider, sew, garden, play the piano, play cards and her family.

Survivors include her children, Michael Berens, Victoria, KS; Matthew Berens and his wife, Alice, Hays, KS; Michelle Berens, Overland Park, Kansas; his grandchildren, Jenna Berens; Tia Berens; Devin Berens; Hogan Berens; Shelbie Keith and her husband, Kevin; Shane Berens and her fiancé, Angel Bryant; his brother, Bill Kuhn and his wife, Sheila, Hays, KS; his two sisters, Myra Pinard and Doraleen Laprade, both of Hays, KS.

Norma was predeceased by her parents; her husband; his daughter, Milissa Rae Berens; his son, Mitch Berens; and his brother-in-law, Jerry Laprade.

A private family service will be held and interment at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Walker, Kansas. A Christian Burial Mass will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at St. Fidelis Basilica, Victoria, Kansas, with Father James Moster officiating.

A VFW Auxiliary Vigil and Memorial Service with a St. Fidelis Daughters of Isabella and St. Fidelis Christian Mothers Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. this Friday evening, April 15, 2022, and vitiation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday night at Hays Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

The family offers memorials to the order of the organization: The Sainte-Fidèle Basilica or the Sainte-Anne Cemetery in the care of the morgue.
