CHANDIGARH: Sikhs were victims of 198 hate crimes of varying nature in the United States between 2018 and 2020 according to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) records.
This information was shared by Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan during the ongoing Lok Sabha session to a question raised by BJP MP for Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh Maneka Sanjay Gandhi.
According to the annual Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program Hate Crime Statistics Report released by the FBI, the US Department of Justice regarding anti-Sikh hate crime incidents, there were 1,419 hatred motivated by religion-based bias in 2018 and 60 such incidents were reported against Sikhs.
Similarly, 1,512 hate crimes were reported in the United States in 2019 and 49 targeted Sikhs.
Anti-Sikh hate crime cases were at their highest in these three years in 2020, while the total number of hate crime cases was the lowest during this period, with 1,244 reported cases . The Union Minister informed that based on the UCR Program’s Annual Hate Crime Statistics Report released by the FBI in 2018, Sikhs were not the most targeted religious groups in the United States, although incidents targeting them are a matter of grave concern.
He added that the United States is home to a vibrant Indian community of 4.2 million people, which has been a catalyst in cementing closer ties between the two countries. Cases of hate crimes against Indian nationals that have come to the attention of the government have been appropriately handled with US authorities.
According to FBI records for hate crimes in 2020, based on the breakdown of victims by type of bias, 61.8% of victims were victimized due to the racial/ethnic/ancestry bias of the offenders, 20% by because of offenders’ gender bias. orientation bias, 13.3% due to offenders’ religious bias, 2.7% due to offenders’ gender identity bias, 1.4% due to offenders’ disability bias and 0 .7% due to gender bias among offenders. However, a total of 211 cases of multi-biased hate crimes were reported in 2020, involving a total of 346 victims.
Of a total of 7,750 hate crimes classified as crimes against persons in 2020, 53.1% were intimidation, 27.9% common assault and 17.9% aggravated assault. A total of 22 murders and 21 rapes were reported as hate crimes.
