Community Spotlight: Love Your Neighbor

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Love Thy Neighbor started in 1992 with one person helping another find maternity clothes.

It has since grown to meet the different needs of many people in the Harrisonburg area.

“Anyone who comes and asks for help, I’m not saying no,” said Bernadette Moreno-Krause, founder of Love Thy Neighbor.

All you need is an ID, and you are not only part of an organization, but a family.

“We try to meet their needs and our mission is to do so. No matter what it is, we try, ”said Moreno-Krause.

Moreno-Krause and her husband also strive to connect with those they serve.

“They have a person who cares. It’s all love, care and spirituality, that way they’re not alone. We normally take people, if they’re in the hospital or something, I go. I go there in the morning for an hour and I go in the evening for an hour to be with them so that they are not alone, ”explained Moreno-Krause.

In the summer, Love Thy Neighbor brings together volunteers to help meet the needs of older people in the community.

“Raking leaves, making gutters and all that,” Moreno-Krause said. “That way they don’t have to pay for it or anything … We will also give them a certificate at Wood Grill.”

They even make sure to stay in touch with those who end up moving from the area.

“My husband and I are going to visit them. We give them $ 100 worth of food while we visit and take them out to dinner, ”said Moreno-Krause.

And they’ve been doing it all from TJ’s Dermagraphics Tattoos in downtown Harrisonburg and their own home, which is currently filled with freebies as part of their latest project.

“We are giving the Christmas present. I do it every year and they love it. We welcome a lot of registrants. They get five wishes and we try to fulfill those five wishes that meet their needs, ”said Moreno-Krause.

The 70 people who signed up this year will also have a hot meal when they come to the tattoo parlor next month to collect their gifts.

It’s too late to sign up for the Christmas giveaway, but if you want to donate to Love Thy Neighbor or join the organization for help anytime of the year, you can call (540) 578 -2006.
