Returning items to Amazon isn’t as easy as buying them. But it’s getting closer. Whether your items are damaged, accidentally purchased, the wrong size, or just plain unwanted, don’t panic. You have several ways to make an Amazon return, including options if you don’t have a printer (who does it these days?) For a return label. In fact, you may not even need to pack your return anymore.
According to an Amazon blog post on Wednesday, you can drop off your unpacked and untagged return orders at approximately 6,000 locations across the United States, and they will repackage your return and send it back to Amazon for you, free of charge.
“We understand that finding a box and duct tape and printing a label for a return can always be a problem,” the Amazon blog says. “Now, most Amazon returns are easier than ever with no box required.”
Where to bring Amazon returns
Here are the four places where Amazon currently accepts unpacked and untagged returns:
- UPS: In over 4,700 UPS stores nationwide.
- Kohl’s: In approximately 1,150 Kohl’s stores in 48 states.
- Amazon physical stores: In Amazon Books and 4 Star Amazon stores. About 50 stores are scattered across several states.
- (Some) Whole Foods markets: According to Amazon, some, but not all, Whole Foods stores accept returns without packaging or labels. Other locations are coming soon. Check the return details to see if your nearest Whole Foods is included.
While you have multiple places to make these returns, that doesn’t mean you can just show up with your oversized jacket from Amazon and expect them to pick it up. You will need to start the return process online first.
How to Return Amazon Items Without Box and Tags
Amazon says most items purchased from its U.S. site and shipped by the company are eligible for at least one free return option. Items eligible for return usually have several different options, some of which are chargeable.
If you don’t have a printer or shipping supplies, the first step is to verify your order’s return eligibility.
To do this, log into your Amazon account and go to your order history in your account settings. There you will be able to see a list of your recent orders. You generally have 30 days from the date of delivery to make your return.
Amazon is extending this period for the holiday season. For most items ordered between October 1 and December 31, 2021, you will have until January 31 to return them. If your order is within the allotted time, follow the instructions to initiate the return process.
Then Amazon will ask you “Why are you returning this?” Be sure to answer carefully (and honestly), as this will affect your return options. You can choose from a list of multiple responses, including:
- Wrong item has been sent
- Item defective or not working
- Purchased in error
- Inaccurate website description
You can also choose from several other reasons for your return even if nothing went with the item, such as “no longer needed” or “best price available”. Note that these options may trigger a return process which is not free.
Select the one that best suits your situation. You will also have the option to leave a comment, in which you can describe your problem in more detail.
Then Amazon will display your refund and return options. Depending on your order, you may be able to exchange the item, obtain Amazon credit, or receive a refund to the credit or debit card used for the original purchase. Finally, choose your return option. (Again, not all options are free.)
To return an item without a box or tag for free, the easiest option will probably be to drop it off at a nearby Kohl’s or UPS store, as Amazon partners nearly 6,000 locations across the country. Several UPS related return options may be listed, so be sure to select the correct one if you do not wish to package your return. Amazon will clearly state which option is eligible for unpacked or untagged returns.
Once you’ve confirmed your drop-off and return location, Amazon will send you a QR code for you to show an employee at the drop-off location. They’ll scan it, take your order, and do the rest for you.
It’s a bit of a process, of course. But it’s more convenient than the usual return-to-retail rig, in which you have to transport your item to the store where you bought it, stand in line and show them your ID, receipt and card. used to buy it.
Plus, it just adds to the list of reasons printers are unnecessary in 2022.
